The family of William Chapman, a 23-year-old man who died after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, have paid tribute to him, describing him as a “bright, warm and engaging young man”.
Chapman died on Saturday, 10 October, after entering the enclosure. Emergency services were called to the wildlife park shortly after 1.30pm, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to reports citing police.
In a statement released on Tuesday, his family said they were devastated by the loss. They also disclosed that Chapman had experienced significant mental health difficulties over several years. They said the coroner would determine whether this played any part in the circumstances surrounding his death.
The family appealed for respect and privacy, saying distressing and offensive material circulating online had added to their suffering. They urged people not to share such content while they grieve.
Chapman was previously a student at Jackie Palmer Stage School in High Wycombe. The school also expressed sadness at his death, remembering him fondly and extending condolences to his family and friends.
South Yorkshire Police have been involved in the investigation, while Doncaster Council has launched a health and safety inquiry into the incident. Yorkshire Wildlife Park has confirmed that the tiger involved, named Altai, is safe and will not be put down.
The circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation. The family have asked the public to respect the process and allow them to grieve privately.
