At least five Palestinians were killed after an Israeli airstrike struck a residential apartment in western Gaza City early on Saturday, according to Palestinian health and civil defence officials.

Four women were among those killed, while at least six other people were reported wounded and taken to al-Shifa Hospital for treatment.

The strike hit an apartment in the al-Asala building in the Remal area, one of the densely populated parts of Gaza City. Reports said the attack caused extensive damage to the building and neighbouring homes and sparked a fire.

Among those killed were a Christian mother, Maisa Abu Dawoud, and her daughter Mary, according to medics and church officials cited by Reuters. A funeral was later held at Saint Porphyrius Church in Gaza City.

Palestinian Civil Defence teams worked at the scene following the strike, searching through the damaged building for victims and survivors.

The Israeli military had not immediately issued a public comment on the specific strike, according to Reuters. Israel has said in recent weeks that it has carried out strikes against Hamas, while Hamas has denied rebuilding its military capabilities or violating the ceasefire.

The incident comes amid continued violence in Gaza despite a ceasefire that began in October 2025. Reuters reported that Gaza health officials say more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the ceasefire began.

The latest deaths and the circumstances surrounding the strike remain part of the wider and ongoing conflict in Gaza.
